In between asking her husband “would you go home with the first person you see coming out of the club tonight?” and putting her hand on her gay son’s crotch and commenting “hmm… well that’s interesting”, Julianne Moore was quite excellent in Savage Grace. It’s a really disturbing film though, I came out of it not really knowing what to say to my equally disturbed companions. Haha. But thanks very much to popartgirl for treating us to the show! :D

I watched Royston Tan’s 881 yesterday. It being a heartlander film with dialogue mostly in Hokkien, added to the fact that the cinema was at AMK Hub, meant that the audience was predominantly auntie.

Some time ago, we were in a cinema. I can’t remember the exact show we were watching, but before it began, there was a trailer than began with that slightly eerie but totally familiar tune. She gripped my arm tightly and said: “We must watch this!”

And so we did.

Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix (2007)

Much like the other Potter films, this one (the fifth in the series) is one for fans of the books. It’s almost impossible to figure out who is who and what’s going on if you don’t have some degree of prior knowledge. So if you think Hogwarts is some skin disease and Expecto Patronum is, well, gibberish, do consider watching Die Hard 4.0 or Transformers instead.

The anatomy of a Hollywood summer blockbuster:
– Soldiers fighting seemingly invincible enemies
– Explosions galore
– Hot babe eye candy
– Sexual tension and resulting humour
– Fast, gleaming, speeding modes of transport

Guess which movie has all this and more… than meets the eye?

the girl who leapt through time.

2218hrs

We watched Potter #5 at the end of a very long day for me! So glad the whole saga is over, haha. But I want to write about another film we caught before I forget/lose interest. It’s the first anime I’ve ever watched in the cinema, something that is critically acclaimed and that I’ve heard nothing but good things about.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time [時をかける少女] (2006)

Time travel stories have intrigued me since the first time I watched Back To The Future. And here, we have a beautifully animated film done the way only Japanese animators can. Put together, it is 98 minutes of laughter, smiles and food for thought.

c’est la vie, mon chéri.

Going to the cinema brings out all sorts of emotions in me. Most movies make me laugh (‘cos I try to go for funny flicks, heheh); others have me gripping the edge of my seat; and yet others open my eyes to things I never knew existed.

But very seldom do movies bring out the most primal emotion in me – crying. I won’t say I am not an emotional person; it’s just that, most tearjerker movies try too hard to, urm, jerk my tears such that it loses impact. However, once in a while there comes a film which is funny and sweet for the most part, but when it comes to the crunch, is devastatingly, powerfully sad. Forrest Gump is one such movie… another is a Hong Kong movie from 1993 which made me cry when I watched it on TV. :(

Went to watch a movie with my sister and cousins yesterday!

Pirates Of The Carribean: At World’s End (2007)

Actually I’m not sure how I ended up watching this one… after all, I’d studiously avoided the first two installments! But it’s always good to keep an open mind right?
